According to an article published online by Akindotun Merino on 3 February, 2020, "Stress is the physiological and psychological response to real or imagined threats that we feel unable to deal with. In a medical or biological context stress is a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension. Stresses can be external (from the environment, psychological, or social situations) or internal (illness, or from a medical procedure)."

"A study by the World Bank in 2017 revealed that 22 per cent of Nigerians, on average, are chronically depressed," culled from Nigeria NewsDirect.

Even though little or no attention is paid to stress, it is very deadly as it can lead to several other illnesses.

There are a number of factors that can lead to stress, as opposed to the general believe that stress is only caused by over working and lack of rest.

1) Too much pressure.
2) Lack of control over the outcome of an event.
3) Uncertainty.
4) Financial challenges.
5) Relationships.
6) Loss of a loved one.
7) Overwhelming job demands.
8) Lack of rest and sleep, etc

According to research, a lot of illnesses have been related to stress or can be worsened by stress. These illnesses include:

1) Obesity.
2) Heart diseases.
3) Depression.
4) Headache.
5) Aging (although aging is not an illness but stress can make you look way older than you are).
6) Diabetes.
7) Alzheimer.
8) Insomnia etc.

What brings about stress?

According to a site online, Mayo clinic, "Your body’s fight-or-flight mechanism is a natural, life-saving system that’s highly efficient and effective when you have to use your muscles quickly. However, the stress of modern life can cause it to short circuit.

If you’re under constant stress, rather than short-lived or occasional stress, the hypothalamus, a tiny region at the base of your brain, triggers an alarm that stays on." When the fight or flight mechanism doesn't go away, stress comes in.

There are two types of stress:
1) Eustress: this is a good stress.
2) Distress: this is the bad stress.

Stress has symptoms that announces it's presence.

Symptoms of stress:

1) Anger.
2) Over reaction.
3) Fear.
4) Withdraw.
5) Sexual changes
6) Frustration
7) Iritation etc.

There is hope for anyone dealing with stress as it is not incurable.

How to deal with stress:

1) Get proper rest.
2) Exercise.
3) Get supportive family and friends to help.
4) Seek professional help.
5) Avoid smoking and alcohols.
6) Meditation.

Stress can be avoided before it starts. Remember health is wealth.

Thank you for your article. Actually, I really had to read and re-read this the last few days. I actually studied this entire research on your points of view. I would like to add that there are a lot of stress that goes on day by day with the local Police and the communities. We've had numerous crimes such as the O.J. Simpson, George Floyd, and now the Daunte Wright cases. And the community is going through with Black Lives Matter. The communities in every state or country are going through numbers of stress with the police mishandling the law. More people do believe that our laws are so corrupt it's what they refer as OBM / One Big Mistake. The communities are very stressed that our court systems are not handling the cases when brought up. There is so much crime that our children nowadays are too afraid to go out and play, even in broad daylight. I really would love to see more crimes not committed, nor child endangerment, we need to pray minute by minute that this can be a well taught stress free world.
