According to National Institute of Mental Health, "Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, make choices, and relate to others. Mental health is more than the absence of a mental illness—it’s essential to your overall health and quality of life". The World Health Organisation also defined it as, “a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
Mental health is usually classified using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Classification for Diseases (ICD).
The issue of mental health is very important but a lot of people pay little or no attention to it. The state of our mental health, have great impact on our work life and even in our relationship with others and as such, there is a need to take care if it and pay close attention to it as much or even much more than we pay close attention to your physical health.
The following are some of the things that can affect the state of our mental health:
Trauma
Stress
Poverty
Drug abuse
Abuse, etc.
With the increase in the number of patients with mental health issues, there is a need, to take note of some actions or things that can have positive effect on the state of our mental health in other to reduce the number of mental health cases worldwide and encourage quality mental health.

Surround yourself with positive people
A positive mind is a medicine. Been around positive people can help you maintain a healthy mental state and surrounding yourself with people that are positive goes a long away in helping you stay on track in your effort to stay mentally healthy. The importance of surrounding yourself with these people is that, they can left you up when you feel down.
Engage in meaningful activities
You can volunteer to do things that benefits others. Doing things that help others, can make us feel good about ourselves. Do not only focus on your problems. When you reach out to others in need, it gives you relief and hope that you can pull through with whatever it is that you are dealing it. Even if all is well with you, helping and volunteering to help others, keeps you in a good place mentally.
Exercise regularly
Regular exercise, can help you both physically and mentally. Exercise improve your mood, noost your brain capacity and also improve your cognitive health.
Focus on being grateful
Everyday, take note of things to you are regretful for. You can have a notebook or you can take notes on your phone or on your device about things that you are super grateful for. Your focus, should not only be only on the big things, like your new investment, your new car or new house but it will pay off a lot if you start by focusing on the little things that are the basis for the bigger things.
