Social media tech companies Like Instagram, TikTok, Soso Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and Google are facing rising pressure from European authorities as new rules are being advanced to curb the power of digital companies, not excluding ChatGPT
The European Union’s executive arm has listed about 19 of the biggest online platforms, social media portals, and search engines that must meet extra obligations for cleaning up illegal content, fake news, and misinformation to the public, a move designed to keep users safe under the 27-nation bloc’s landmark digital rules that will take effect later this year.
On that note, the U.K. government has also unveiled legislation that would give regulators more power to help protect consumers from online scams, fraud, misinformation, and fake reviews while also boosting digital competition among others. These efforts continue to solidify Europe as a global leader in reining in the power of social media companies and other digital companies.
Scheduled to start from August 25, the beginning with top tech companies, the biggest online platforms, and social media platforms will have to give European users more control in reporting things like hate speech and other illegal content. They will also have to provide more information on why their systems recommended certain content
It was expected that tech platforms will have to “completely redesign” their systems to ensure high levels of privacy for children, including age verification, and terms of use among others will also be updated
The European Commission’s list of platforms online includes those with at least 45 million users in Europe, but the changes could have trickle-down effects on other platforms, start-ups, and companies.
