For some Nigerians, schooling abroad is a big dream that seems impossible because of the rigorous procedures and requirements involved.

Everything that have to do studying abroad on scholarship (partial or fully funded) or on non scholarship is quite ardous and having basic knowledge on what to do is key in this journey.

Though getting admission into a foreign University is quite difficult and procedures and requirements, differs, there are general rules that will guide an applicant and will give him a 70 percent chance of being accepted.

Decide the country and school of your choice

If you have made up your mind to study abroad, you must pick a country. After you have selected a country, look up the terrestrial institutions in the country that accept international students, schools that offer scholarships to international students or students from your country.

After this, search for more information on the top 10 schools on your selected list.

Know the entry requirement

After you have narrowed your list of 10 to 5 or more schools, you find out what the entry requirement for each school is.

Every scholar whether in Nigeria or abroad, have an entry requirement. Meeting this entry requirements, is what qualifies you for an admission into the school.

For bachelor degrees and postgraduate degrees, the basic academic requirements is WAEC and a second class upper bachelor degree certificate or atleast a second class lower bachelor degree certificate (for some schools), respectively.

A Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), International English Language Test System (IELTS) will be required for students applying for scholarships in the US.

It is important you find out the required scores for the above mentioned test for those applying for the schools in the US for the schools of your choice.

When is the deadline

Know the deadline. Search for the deadline in the school website to avoid late submission.

You need a visa

Apply for a visa as you apply to a school because not all schools facilitate in visa application process. Begin to apply for your visa as early as possible if the school of your choice do not facilitate visa application to avoid delay.

Keep your documents close

Your documents should be available to avoid last minute delay or rush. Get your recommendation letter(s) available and your certificate(s) too.


Submit your application

It is important that you submit your application on time to stand a chance of been admitted that is, if you make their requirements.

In your application, ensure to provide as much information as required. No matter how some requirements many seem unimportant, ensure you pay attention to it. Also provide as much information as possible for every question or information
needed.

Prepare for interview

Some schools conduct an online interview for foreign students in other to determine the best students deserving of the admission. Knowing what to say and saying it wrong will never get you admitted. So, the key here, for an applicant is adequate preparation. Search for online student interviews and learn from them.

Be confident, articulate and relaxed. Ensure you state your plans, goals and experiences fluently if needful.
