DO'S AND DON'TS FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS

According to WHO diabetes mellitus commonly know as diabetes, " is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves."

It is a metabolic disease which causes high blood sugar level. There is a hormone in the human body called insulin and this hormone, plays a big role in the presence or absence of diabetes in the human body. Insulin is a peptide hormones ie protein hormones. Insulin, is responsible for the he conversion of energy from one form to the other in the human body.

Diabetes occurs as a result of the body's inability to produce sufficient insulin, the body's inability to make make use of the insulin produced in the body or the absence of insulin in the body.

There are two types of diabetes

1) Type 1 diabetes.

2) Type 2 diabetes.


Do's and don'ts for diabetic patients

Proper dieting and exercising are important in the management of diabetes. A diabetic patient needs to be mindful of his food and drink intake as his nutritional requirements is same as someone without diabetes and as such, he is expected to have a tailor made nutritional plan based on his weight, sex age, height etc.

DOS

Take vegetables.

Go for skinless chicken and fish. Include protein foods from plant sources to you diet.

Take unflavoured and low fat milk.

Eat selected fruits such as apple, guava etc.

Drink plenty of water.

Limit your salt intake.

Take high fibre foods.

Cut on the amount of refined stuffs you consume. Eat more of unprocessed food.

Engage in exercise such as weight lifting and other exercises to build your muscles as our muscles play a role in using and storing sugar.

Do visit a doctor for proper consultation and advice.

DON'TS FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS

Avoid fried foods.

Stay clear of tubers such as beetroot, potatoes, yam etc.

Avoid caffeinated drinks such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, etc.

Do not base your diet on another patients tailor made diet.
