ADHD means Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), "ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active."

ADHD is characterized by inattention, overactivity and impulsivity, and it mostly common in childhood. According to reports, boys are more frequently diagnosed with ADHD often than girls and research is yet to prove why it is so and girls with ADHD, tend to be more quiet than their male counterpart who are overly active.

It is a “minimal brain damage” or “hyperkinetic syndrome” and was clinical defined in 1902. ADHD interferes in a patient's social and academic activities. "ADHD can begin before children enter school, it is most commonly identified and treated in primary school, around ages 7 to 9 years," https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK82363/.

ADHD is not a mental illness as assumed by most people especially, in developing countries but it is rather a mental disorder. Children with ADHD, can achieve a lot with adequate care, love and attention and they can in some cases be treated too.

There are sub types of ADHD:

1) Predominantly inattentive: this is characterised by inattention.

2) Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive: this is characterised by hyperactiveness and impulsiveness.

3) Combined: this the combination of both Predominantly inactive and Predominantly hyperactive/impulse characteristics.

ADHD can be mild, moderate or severe, and they may continue from childhood into adulthood.

Causes of ADHD:

As there have not been a laboratory test to diagnose ADHD, so also, there have not been any identified specific cause of the disorder. However, evidence shows that it can be genetically inherited. Other causes include, brain injury, pre-mature birth and smoking by the mother during pregnancy.
