Growth disorders are a group of diseases that involve irregular growth or abnormal enlargement of bones and other parts of the body.

Growth disorders occur when the natural processes that regulate growth do not function properly. The average person will grow a total of 26 inches in height in their lifetime. To reach this height, there are specific periods when the person needs to grow.

Those who do not follow the required periods or experience severe growth problems during these times face a detrimental future. For example, one man does not fall within the typical growth pattern even though he is close to 7 feet tall and 16 years old.

Growth disorders can be caused from a variety of factors, including genetic mutations or chromosomal changes, but the most common cause is an over-activation of the growth hormone receptor.

While some signs and symptoms of a growth disorder include: stunted height, thin and small body shape, and long arms and legs. These symptoms can be treated with growth hormone injections, which may also help with weight control.
